This is the perfect BBQ wine. Its full body and dark bitter cocoa jam appeal in contrasts as rich and dry notes dance around. At a steal on the shelf at $6.99, I think its one of the best deals around, except that its gonna run out as I could only get a hold of about twenty cases, and half of that is gone already.
Carmenere comes from Chile, as it was recently discovered ancient varietal survivor of the phyloxera epidemic in France in the 1800s. It was mistaken for merlot for quite awhile, giving the Chilean crop a little something extra with meaty smokey elements. Now harvested on its own, it beats out cab sauv in depth and roundness, with distinct notes of smoke, tobacco, earth, cocoa and dark berry/seed fruit jams. Its become one of my favorite quaffs, and I've been luckily able to find well over two dozen great examples of it, all ranging from $4.99 to $39.99.
enjoy,
